William Blake said, "Traveling abroad is a progressive exercise in our own ignorance." While educational travel at Rockbridge Academy may culminate in our Senior Grand Tour, in which our rising seniors tour Greece and Italy for two weeks each June, the younger grades take great advantage of the educational value of local travel as well. Travel and field trips are an integral part of our study of history, art, science, mathematics, and culture, and a progressive exercise in discovering how much we have left to learn.

Kindergarteners, who study their community, visit the local firehouse and the Pumpkin Patch to get a better understanding of the responsibilities of firemen and farmers. While second graders can't visit North Africa as part of their Ancient Egyptian studies, a trip to the Walter's Art Museum in Baltimore, which houses an outstanding collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts, is a good second best. One room school houses, the Washington Cathedral, the National Cryptologic Museum at the National Security Agency, Williamsburg and Jamestown, Gettysburg, the Kennedy Center for a performance of Beethoven's "Fidelio"...this is a small sample of the rich variety of educational opportunities our students have available to them outside the classroom in the Washington/Baltimore area.

As St. Augustine said, "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page."

At Rockbridge Academy, our students have wonderful opportunities to read from more than the books on the classroom bookshelves.
